Frequently Asked Questions:
What is scabbling?
Scabbling is a process of removing a thin layer of concrete with an air-powered chipping machine. The machine we use has 5 heads, each with several carbide tips that peck at the concrete. It takes several passes with the machine to achieve the required depth.
What does scabbling look like?
The grooves are approximately 2” wide, 3” apart and 1/8 to 3/16” deep.
I already have some grooving but it’s not working. Can you scabble over those grooves?
We scabble over many thousands of square feet of other styles of grooving each year, including both poured and diamond-sawed grooves. We usually scabble at an angle across the other grooves. These other types of grooves usually help with traction a little, but without the excellent, long-term results of scabbling.
What do I need to do before and after you scabble?
We ask that you have the concrete scraped clean (you don’t need to wash it and we don’t require water for our work). You don’t need to be there while we are working. The scabbling leaves behind a mixture of dust and grit and we think it’s a good idea to sweep or scrape that up before turning the cows back into the area. That’s up to you; some do and some don’t.
Do you need water to run your machine?
No. Our machines are air powered and require no water.
Will the grooves make it hard for me to scrape?
We try to run the grooves in the direction you scrape so that they don’t interfere with the scraping. At corners or places where you scrape both directions we angle the grooves so they don’t catch your blade.
Do I need to scabble both directions?
No. Scabbling provides very effective traction in all directions. Scabbling saves you money since we don’t need to charge you twice for the same square footage.
How long will it last?
We can’t guarantee how long it will last because of differences in concrete and scraping methods. However, since 1986 we have freshened up grooves at only a few of hundreds of jobs we have done.
Will my cows be comfortable on scabbled concrete?
Yes. In our experience, cows learn where the traction is and choose to walk on the scabbled areas if given a choice.
What areas would be better left un-scabbled?
Concrete that has been poured over other concrete and is less than 2” thick may crack, and areas that are “pot-holed” or broken into small pieces will probably break further. Any sound concrete, even if it is cracked, can be scabbled without causing a problem. If you aren’t sure about whether scabbling is suitable for your type of concrete, give us a call. We’ve done a wide variety of jobs.
Where do you work?
We are based in southwestern Michigan. The map shows our primary service area, but we are open to traveling to other areas if there is enough interest. Give us a call to see if we are planning a trip to your area.
How do I contact you?
If you live in the high-lighted states you can call our toll-free number, 1-800-554-2288. Otherwise, send us a note at [email protected] or give us a call at 269-587-0115. We will be happy to provide you with a free estimate and can also give you references of jobs near you that we have done.
How do you charge for scabbling?
We measure each area and calculate by the square foot. We only measure what we actually do, not wall to wall.
